JCCMW offers American Red Cross courses onsite! These courses give the confidence, skills, and certification necessary to work as a lifeguard. Classes teach prevention, rescue, and emergency response skills around water.

Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification

This three-day course provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over.

A seven-hour training module online must be completed before the first day of class.

Participants who successfully complete the lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED valid for two years.

Prerequisites

  1. Age 15+
  2. Swim 300 yards continuously.
  3. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
  4. Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds by starting in the water, swimming 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point and exit the water without using steps or a ladder.

Please note: Accommodations can be made for Shabbat observant participants.

Has your American Red Cross certification almost expired? Get recertified in this complete recertification class that covers lifeguarding and CPR/AED professional rescuer certification.  Participants must have a valid ARC Lifeguard certification to participate (must be less than 30 days past certification expiration date).

Waterfront Module

This course is for individuals who have a current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.

Prerequisites

  • 15 years of age on or before the last date of the course
  • Swim 550 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 feet of water, resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards to complete the sequence.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes, using only legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds.
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
    • Surface dive, feet first or headfirst, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath.

Requirements

Participants must have a valid and current Lifeguard Certification.  Completion and competency of skills and score 80% or better on final exam. Participants must behave maturely and responsibly and must attend all classes.
