Tap, Modern and Contemporary

Rhythm, rhythm and rhythm! A syllabus-based program teaching age- and level-appropriate steps.  Tap enhances musical understanding, coordination and even math skills!

**We offer online open registration for our entry level classes. Registration in all other classes for all new students requires an evaluation by our Dance Director, Kristen McGrew. Please click here to request an evaluation so that we can ensure your child is placed at an appropriate level.


Session I

Mondays

Session II

14 Mondays

Tap 1

5-7 years. This beginner tap class will take the student through basics and more. Dress Code: Black leotard, tights or leggings, tap shoes. Hair tied back. No jewelry.
3:30 – 4.15pm
Instructor: Arleigh Rothenberg

Tap 2

7 – 9 years. This tap class is a progression of Tap I, including warm-up, across the floor work, and short combinations. Clarity of steps and rhythms will be a main focus, and of course, fun! Dress Code: Black leotard, tights or leggings, tap shoes. Hair tied back. No jewelry.
4:15 – 5:00pm
Instructor: Arleigh Rothenberg

Tap 3

10 years and up. Placement evaluation required at this level. At least three years’ experience is necessary. Students may advance to the next level at the discretion of the instructor. Dress Code:  Black shirt with pants or leggings (no jeans), tap shoes. Hair tied back. No jewelry.
6:45 – 7:30pm

Intermediate/Advanced Tap Workshop

11 years and up. This full-year class focuses on developing tap students into performers. On an invitation-only basis, dancers are taught repertory that encompasses the history of tap dance styles. Dress Code:  Black shirt with pants or leggings (no jeans), tap shoes. Hair tied back. No jewelry.


The instructor/choreographer will stage standard tap dances as well as more contemporary rhythm tap pieces, which will showcase in JCC Outreach programs and the Annual WTD Concert. There is an additional performance fee (which covers costume, technical fees and DVD) for Workshop students to perform in the Westchester Theatre of Dance Concert, March 2020.

Modern Dance

11 years and up. A modern dance class based on the technique of Lester Horton.  This technique is seen most notably in the masterwork by Alvin Ailey “Revelations”.  College bound dancers will need this in their toolbox for auditions and work at the university level. Dress Code: Black leotard, black footless tights, bare feet or footies. Hair in a bun. No jewelry.

Tuesdays, 5:30 – 6:30pm

Contemporary Dance

13-18 years old. Designed to express artistry through movement using music familiar to teens. Dress Code: Black leotard and pink footless tights, bare feet or footies. Hair tied back. No jewelry.
