Families seeking Jewish identity building and education have an excellent resource at the J. The Jewish Culture and Learning Department offers a wide variety of classes, workshops and forums for everyone from young families to older adults. These programs include collaborations with Israel and strive to expand the knowledge and understanding of Judaism through ongoing learning. The department also serves as a Jewish resource for the community.

Israel Connections Club

Activities for children ages 3 years to 5th grade

The Israel Connections Club aims to connect Westchester Israelis and other Hebrew speaking families through programming and events that emphasize spoken Hebrew and provide a fun and secular way to experience Jewish holidays and Israeli culture. Programming is available for children, families and adults.

Shirim V’Mischakim (Song and Games)

3 – 5 years old. Pre-schoolers and Kindergartners will have fun in Hebrew in this dynamic class through movement, music, puppets and games.  The songs and activities in class will emphasize oral communication.  Class themes are based on Israeli culture and a secular approach to Jewish holidays. This program is conducted entirely in Hebrew and is geared to children who speak Hebrew at home or with proven proficiency.

Ivrit B’Ivrit (Hebrew Literacy)

1st – 5th grades.  This Hebrew literacy class is taught by two professional Israeli educators who will work on expanding vocabulary and building literacy with a curriculum that weaves in Israeli culture, and Jewish holidays and themes. Children will be grouped and separated for activities in classes based on age and Hebrew proficiency. Younger students will focus on learning to read and write in Hebrew while older students continue their mastery of the language. Classes include conversation, games, books and written work. Weekly assignments are given to continue the learning throughout the week. This program is conducted entirely in Hebrew and is geared to children who speak Hebrew at home or with proven proficiency.

Matchilim (Beginner’s Hebrew)

1st – 3rd grades. Children will enjoy learning to read, write and speak modern Hebrew with a professional educator who is experienced teaching the language to non-native speaking children. The class will use the proven TaL AM curriculum and is nonreligious in its approach, although Jewish themes or holidays may be touched upon in an Israeli cultural context. This class is geared towards students with no prior knowledge of Hebrew.

Holiday Celebrations and Activities for the Entire Family

Embrace Jewish holidays at the JCC!  Listen to festive music and dip applies in honey on Rosh HaShanah, spend time in the Sukkah, help us light the giant menorah on Hanukkah, dress up in costumes for Purim, remember the Six Million Jews fallen on Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), pay tribute to fallen Israeli soldiers and victims of terror on Yom HaZikaron (Israel’s Memorial Day) and celebrate the 69th anniversary of the State of Israel on Yom HaAtzmaut.  Be sure to join us for the Westchester Jewish Film Festival and the Israeli Film Festival and other cutural activities through the yesr.
