Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice is one of the most notorious depictions of a Jewish man in the history of the arts and literature. What was the impetus behind a Jewish character taking center stage in this play and how has that impacted Jewish portrayals in theater and cinema since that time?

About the Speaker

Jacob Nurick is the JCCMW’s adult engagement manager. He holds a master’s degree in Jewish Education from The Jewish Theological Seminary and a BFA in Drama from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where he combined his love of theater with his passion for Jewish storytelling.
